When providing a safe environment for your children to play in, the playground surfacing on which they play is particularly important.

We all know that from time to time children will accidentally fall from even the safest piece of equipment when playing. The purpose of safer surfacing is to cushion the impact of a child’s accidental fall and reduce the severity of an injury.

We all know that from time to time children will accidentally fall from even the safest piece of equipment when playing in any play area. The purpose of playground safety surfacing is to cushion the impact of a child’s accidental fall and reduce the severity of an injury in an outdoor children’s play area.

To meet the requirements of BS EN1176 and BS EN1177, Playdale recommend that impact absorbing surfaces must be installed beneath all play equipment with a free height of fall greater than 0.6m. If the existing playground surface is tarmac or concrete, playground safety surfacing should be installed beneath all external children’s play equipment regardless of the free height of fall.

We offer a wide range of playground safety surfacing, including wet pour, tiles, synthetic grass and loosefill. The appropriate playground safer surfacing for your play area will depend on several factors; type of play equipment, cost, durability, aesthetic appearance, maintenance and local ground and climatic conditions.

Our Area Managers can advise you on all aspects of playground safer surfacing.
All playground safer surfacing offered by Playdale has been independently tested to ensure full compliance with BS EN1177 and BS 7188.

The installation of each playground safety surfacing type is closely monitored through our ISO9001 quality system to ensure the required standards are constantly met for your play area.

Details on surfacing requirements for each Playdale unit can be found on our Technical CD in the back of our brochure.

Wet Pour

Wet Pour is a continuous rubber playground safety surface that gives a high quality, hard wearing, slip-resistant safer surface requiring little or no maintenance for your play area.

Mixed at the play area site, the rubber EPDM granule and polyurethane resin mixture is wet laid to various thicknesses onto a prepared area.

The thickness and area of wet pour is determined by the free height of fall of the playground equipment installed. The correct thickness and area of wet pour is laid around each piece of equipment to provide a sufficient level of impact absorbency for the play area.

Wet Pour playground safer surfacing is available in a range of colours. Although the standard colour is black, a coloured fleck can be added to enhance appearance of the finished play area. Coloured shapes, logos and floor games can be laid into the safety surface to give an individual theme and provide additional play value to your play area.

Wet Pour complies with BS EN1177 and BS 7188. Test certificates are supplied for all thicknesses offered.

All Wet Pour safety surfaces offered by Playdale use hard wearing EPDM rubber granules.

Loosefill

Loose-fill playground safer surfacing has excellent impact absorbing properties and combines well with all outdoor children’s play equipment to give a warm, natural appearance to your play area.

The capital cost of loosefill safety surfacing is far less than wet pour and tiles, however maintenance costs (i.e. raking and top-ups) should be taken into account.

To meet the requirements of BS EN1176 and BS EN1177, all Playdale loosefill safety surfaces should be maintained to a depth of 300mm. The use of raised loosefill areas will aid drainage to your play area.

Cushionfall
This is an environmentally friendly playground safety surface, produced from recycled timber products. The shredded timber gives excellent impact absorbing properties to your play area and is provided in a variety of colours.

Playgrade Bark
This high quality graded Pine bark gives an attractive safety surface, which is well suited to most play areas and locations and for use with the majority of outdoor children’s play equipment.

Sand
In some situations playgrade sand is an effective loosefill safer surface. It is also a play medium in its own right.

All Playdale loosefill impact absorbing safety surfaces have been independently tested to guarantee full compliance with BS EN1177 and BS 7188.
Test certificates are supplied for all loosefill safety surfaces.

Safagrass Safety Surfacing

Black rubber matrix safety surface tiles installed onto existing turf of your play area. Allows existing grass to grow through, which can then be mown as usual.

This playground safer surface is only suitable for reasonably flat play areas with good quality existing turf. Plastic pegs hold the mat in place until the grass grows through strengthening the hold further. Following installation, maintenance of the turf edging (i.e. watering, prevention against vandalism) is the clients responsibility.

This safety surface will follow any existing undulations on site.
Installation onto unsuitable sites (i.e. soft ground, existing turf of insufficient quality), can cause tiles to sink and reduce the impact absorbency properties of the safety surface. Poor maintenance (i.e. infrequent mowing) can lead to uneven patches creating trip points or reducing impact absorbing properties.

Safagrass safer surfacing complies with BS EN1177 and BS 7188 for fall heights up to 2.0m. Test certificates are supplied.

NoMow

NoMow safe is a 50mm multi-toned, textured synthetic grass consisting of soft polypropylene fibres infilled with a sterile recycled rubber granule.

NoMow safety surfacing complies to BS EN1177 and BS 7188.
Test certificates supplied for all specifications offered.

Tiles

The rubber tiles we use provide a finished safety surface with similar properties as wet pour safety surfacing. The tiles are laid onto a prepared concrete base.

The safety surfacing tiles are prefabricated, 1m x 1m, and are supplied in various thicknesses for your playground equipment

The thickness of the safety surfacing tile used is dependent on the Critical Fall Height (CFH) of the play equipment.

Quad Pavers

Quad Pavers can be a cost effective way of providing a wear & tear resistant surface at small points of high wear on your play area.

20mm thick, hard wearing, black rubber tiles are bonded onto a 50mm thick concrete paving slabs (600mm x 600mm). Quad Pavers can be installed flush into existing grass surfaces to provide a child friendly path or at points on high wear i.e. adjacent to Springers or at the end of Adventure Trails.

Quad Pavers can also be used in conjunction with loose-fill safer surfaces at points of high wear i.e. beneath swing seats or at the end of slides.

The Safety Mattas system consists of two separate layers, a mesh underlay and the rubber & PVC mats. Safety Matta has been independently tested to BS EN1177 and BS 7188 providing a critical fall height of 2.7m.

Play Mattas
This safety system is designed to be installed on to existing hard playground surfaces such as tarmac or concrete.
The Play Mattas safety surface system consists of three separate layers, a shockpad base, a layer of weed barrier and the rubber & PVC mats.

Play Matta has been independently tested to BS EN1177 and BS 7188 providing a critical fall height of 1.5m when fitted with a 35mm shockpad & 2.8m when fitted with a 60mm shockpad.
