I Want to Build a New Play Area – Where Do I Start?

Building a new playground can be quite a daunting task and you might not have a clue where to start. There are so many questions to answer, so many people to speak to, and the most stressful issue of them all – where will you get the money from?

First of all, remain calm and go make yourself a cup of tea. There is plenty of help that you can get along your exciting playground journey, but to get you started here are some of our top tips that will help your project get off the ground:

1) It’s good to talk

Speak to people in your community. Get a feel for what your friends, parents and children in the area want, and it’s important to remember that you can’t please everyone. There will be some people who don’t like your ideas, that don’t like the equipment you may choose, and some that oppose the play area project completely. Don’t let this phase you, take all of their opinions and ideas on board and you will have a good foundation to push forward on.

2) There’s no ‘I’ in ‘Team’

Get a good team of people together to attack the project. Delegate roles and work together towards the end goal. Different people will bring different skills to the project, so if you get a passionate team together then the project will be a success.

3) Speak to the experts

Playground companies have many years’ experience of dealing with projects just like yours. Playdale offer a free play area design and consultation service where you can speak to an Area Manager who will give you great advice, visit your site to take measurements, and then draw up some 3D plans and animations to show you what your play area could look like. This is particularly useful when you apply for funding as it can help to back up your proposal.

4) Show me the money!

This is obviously your biggest task of the project and it can be a real challenge to raise the money that you need for your new playground. Our Funding Guide has a list of funding providers and step-by-step advice to help you through the application process. Combine this with your own fundraising efforts, grit and determination, then you will reach your goal and build a fantastic new playground for your whole community to enjoy!
