Pac-Man will pound the streets of London to safeguard the UK’s outdoor spaces

Playdale’s Area Manager for the East Midlands, Richard Cocker, is running this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April dressed as Pac-Man, in aid of the fantastic charity Fields in Trust (FIT). This will be Richard’s first ever marathon event, he is training hard and very much looking forward to it.

Fields in Trust (FIT) were founded in 1925 as the National Playing Fields Association by King George V. Their mission is the same now and as it was then; to ensure that everyone – young or old, whatever their ability and wherever they live – should have access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation. These spaces are vital to building happy and healthy communities and sadly they continue to be threatened by all kinds of development. FIT are a national charity and operate throughout the UK to safeguard recreational spaces and campaign for better statutory protection for all kinds of outdoor sites.

Richard is now almost 9 weeks into his rigorous training schedule and over the full 16 week training programme he will have completed just under 400 miles! Richard is married with two young children, so trying to fit his training into his already busy work and family life hasn’t been easy! His training combines 3 shorter runs during the week with a long weekend run, incorporating the local natural environment wherever possible.

Richard told us “The Fields in Trust charity is important to me because I want to help protect playing fields and parks so that all children, including my own, have plenty of places to play, exercise and thrive for years to come. I am choosing to run as Pac-Man to highlight the fight against obesity in children. We need to reinforce the importance of balancing exercise with food intake and the results of combining too much food intake with a sedentary, inactive lifestyle.”

We think we’ll easily be able to spot you in that outfit Richard! Fantastic!

Helen Griffiths, Fields in Trust Chief Executive said of Richard’s marathon challenge,

“Our work – protecting parks and playing fields – would simply not be possible without our generous supporters. On behalf of Fields in Trust and all the communities that benefit from our work thank you Playdale and Richard for your support. Thank you!”

Richard needs to raise £1750 and is working hard to achieve this. Any donations you are able to give would be very gratefully received!
