After months of training and fundraising Playdale’s Regional Manager in the North of the UK, Paul Battye, completed the famous UK IRONMAN event on Sunday in the fantastic time of 12 hours and 29 minutes, finishing a superb 94th place in his age category.
The gruelling triathlon event is designed to push you to your limits with a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle and a marathon 24.2 mile run.
Here’s a summary of Paul’s epic day:
– Wake up at 3.15am for breakfast of 3 porridge pots and a banana
– Taxi at 4am
– Race started 6am
– Paul completed the swim in 1 hour 15 minutes (it was like street fighting in a lake at times!)
– The cycle took 6 hours 30 minutes and the weather remained kind (overcast and cool)
– The marathon started at 2.30pm but by this time it was very hot and sunny (bad sunburn the next day!)
Paul is delighted with his achievement, saying:
“The run was hard towards the end but the fantastic crowds helped all the 2000 athletes to keep on going. My family and friends were out in huge numbers which I can’t thank them enough for.
“Running down the finishing straight was surreal as I never thought I would complete an Ironman. Don’t ask me to do it again though!!!”
Congratulations from everyone at Playdale.
