Trikeri Island, off the Pelion Peninsula in the east of the country, is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Greece and is less than 2 kilometres long by about 1 kilometre wide. Despite only having 75 residents, it is visited by hundreds of tourists each year during the holiday season. Thanks to the Trikeri Island Playgound Project the island is now enjoying a brand new Playdale play area.
The Trikeri Island Playgound Project was set up in 2008 by Allan Hollick and several other trustees. The aim of the project was to replace the old play area with an exciting new playground for the children living on the island as well as for visitors’ children. Previous play facilities for children consisted of an old, broken-down playground which was deemed dangerous and therefore unusable. The new playground was to be donated to the island in memory of Allan’s late wife, Chris.
We were approached to supply the equipment chosen by the project to be installed on the island and they chose a Be-Bop unit from our Jukebox range, some new swings, a Log Cabin and a selection of springers for the younger children. To assist the Trikeri islanders with the installation of the equipment, the project committee chose our installation supervision service. Paul Murray, Installation Team Leader flew out to Trikeri to help with the correct installation of the equipment. Richard Chaloner, one of the trustees of the project commented ‘Paul Murray who accompanied me from the manufacturers, Playdale, was a superb asset and has made a huge effort on our behalf’. The Trustees were particularly impressed with Paul’s ability to tactfully direct the local labour force despite a language barrier and that the construction was almost completely finished within the four days Paul was on site. The islanders said afterwards that it would have been impossible without his assistance and an invitation was promptly extended to Paul to return with his family for a holiday as a guest of the Trustees in appreciation of his excellent work.
