The Unspoiled Queen of The Caribbean

The Unspoiled Queen of The Caribbean

Client: Island of Saba

Location: Saba, Caribbean

In September 2018, Playdale partnered with Netherlands-based playground company, Sports2Play, to deliver three exciting playgrounds on the Island of Saba.

Known as the “Unspoiled Queen of the Dutch Caribbean”, Saba is a five-square-mile island celebrated for its untouched environment and ecotourism.

It was important that the project respected its natural environment. From the very start, it demanded thoughtful design, careful installation, and equipment built to withstand a coastal climate.

The Brief

Funded by the Dutch Government, the project required coordination across multiple stakeholders. Working closely with Sports2Play, Playdale was appointed to supply and support the installation of three playgrounds across key community locations: Museumground, St. Johns and Wilhelminapark.

The objective was clear: create engaging, durable play spaces that complemented Saba’s unique surroundings while delivering high play value for children of all ages.

Designing for Island Life

Each site was carefully considered to reflect its setting and serve its local community. Designed for adventure, children can climb, swing, socialise and explore within spaces that work well with their surrounding landscape.

Across the three playgrounds, we installed a diverse range of Playdale equipment, including our Jungle Climbers Congo, Timber Team Swings, Play Car, and a Timber Aerial Runway at Wilhelminapark

Timber elements were particularly well-suited to the island’s aesthetic, blending naturally into the environment while offering long-term durability in coastal conditions.

Delivery Across the Caribbean

Logistics were a defining feature of this project. Transporting equipment to a small Caribbean island required meticulous planning and collaboration.

Working alongside the Caribbean team from Sports2Play and local contractors, all three playgrounds were successfully installed within just two weeks. Despite the complexity of island delivery, the programme ran smoothly, with one memorable interruption when a curious family of rabbits wandered onto the site to inspect the installation. A fitting reminder that this playground truly sits within one of the Caribbean’s most unspoiled natural environments.

This efficient delivery ensured minimal disruption while achieving a high-quality finish across every site.

Impact and Legacy

Set against sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea, the new playgrounds have become vibrant community hubs. Families and children across Saba now benefit from safe, engaging spaces that encourage active play, social interaction and outdoor exploration.

This project reflects Playdale’s ability to deliver at scale, without compromising on quality, sustainability or play value, even in remote international locations.
