Picnic & Play This Summer in Cumbria

Picnic & Play.. in Cumbria

Welcome to Playdale’s Picnic and Play guide for 2025, created to help families find exciting parks over the summer holidays!  We have made sure that all these parks are equipped with a fantastic selection of playground equipment and spaces to relax over a picnic during the summer holidays.

This week, we are travelling to the home of the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, where Declan Dunne (our Area Sales Manager for Cumbria, North East and Yorkshire) has suggested FOUR family-friendly parks and playgrounds for you to try.

There are of course many more Playdale playgrounds across Cumbria and the rest of the UK, so you won’t struggle to find one near you.

Hammond’s Pond, Carlisle

Hammond’s Pond, Upperby, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA2 4PS (what3words: roof.boxer.joke)

An inclusive playground with a Playdale Inclusive Orbit roundabout featuring seating and handrails in the foreground, set on a smooth, dark Wet Pour safety surface. Behind it, there is an accessible Litle City Melbourne Plus multi-play unit with a slide, colourful green HPL panels, and wide ramps with railings, suitable for wheelchair users. Trees and greenery surround the play area in the background.

Sited in a former brickworks, Hammond’s Pond is now a fantastic public park. Featuring walks, playing fields, a miniature railway, and of course a fantastic play area. On the southern edge of the county town of Carlisle, there is plenty to do on your visit.

The playground at Hammond’s pond is a focal point for your children, featuring equipment for all ages and abilities, including our best-selling Inclusive Orbit and the Melbourne Plus multi-play unit. The park is easily accessible from the centre of Carlisle by car. It even has a café to sit and relax, while the younger members of your family burn off some energy!

Millom Park

Millom Park, 9 St George’s Road, Millom, Cumbria, LA18 4JA (what3words: standards.polished.whirlpool)

A large, colourful playground divided into themed zones with Wet Pour safety surfacing. On the left, a mining-themed area features swings, picnic benches, and train track Wet Pour design. In the centre, a bright green and blue section includes a Mountain Towers Plus multi-play unit, including slides, and two tall castle-like play towers with purple roofs and yellow tube slides. The green section including an Inclusive Orbit roundabout, Gravity Rider, Gravity Bowl, and Play Panel. To the right, a space-themed zone has a Mega Swing and surfacing decorated with a moon and stars. Pathways and grassy areas with benches surround the fenced playground.

We are delighted to provide this exciting play area in Millom, a historic coastal town in South-Western Cumbria. The playground has some incredible features that really set it apart.

For example, the park features a colourful poured surface, which looks stunning against the landscape! Furthermore, the whole playground is themed according to the heritage of the town, with nods to the town’s mining and seafaring heritage. As a result, this playground provides a great place for children to stretch their bodies and their imaginations.

The installation features a huge selection of fun and challenging equipment. A Play Galleon Plus sits as a centerpiece for the toddler playground, with a nod to the town’s maritime tradition. The whole site features lots of design-inclusive elements providing access for all abilities.

If you’re heading to the lesser-discovered West Cumbrian coast, then this is the perfect stop-off, not only to keep your whole family entertained but also to relax during the long drive out there.

The Lake District Visitors Centre, Brockhole

Brockhole, The Lake District Visitor Centre, Windermere, Cumbria LA23 1LJ (what3words: slave.stun.mount)

A woodland adventure playground with a tall green Mountain Towers Plus multi-play tower, featuring multiple enclosed spiral tube slides. The structure connects to climbing walls, rope bridges, and elevated walkways supported by wooden poles. The play area is set on a bark-covered (loosefill) ground surface, surrounded by tall trees, blending naturally into the forest setting.

A perfect family day out! The Lake District Visitor Centre offers a variety of outdoor activities. These include a cafe and gardens, bike hire, mini-golf and the free adventure playground. Which has been a long-standing feature on the grounds.

Updated in 2018, the playground is home to a vast range of play equipment for children of all ages, including a customised Mountain Tower Plus with nine towers and five slides, an inclusive Team Swing, a Play Galleon Plus, a Play Ship, items from our Timber Adventure Trail range, an Activity Net, an Aerial Runway, an inclusive Gravity Bowl, a Playhouse, a Twirly from our Caterpillar range, Toddler Swings, Play Panels , Shelters and Shades.

Ford Park, Ulverston

Ford Park Crescent, Ulverston LA12 7JP (what3words: rents.campus.congested)

Children's playground with a green Little Hamlets multi-play unit, including slides and small climbing walls. There is an Inclusive Orbit roundabout and many green Play Panels in the same area surrounded by green and brown rubber mulch. The background features lush trees, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere.

Based in Cumbria’s beautiful market town of Ulverston, Ford Park is the beating heart of the community. Situated on nine acres of green space, the playground blends in perfectly with the natural surroundings. Offering plenty of space to picnic and play for all ages.

The park have received the coveted Green Flag Award for several years, as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks. In addition, the project includes a kitchen garden community project and features a restaurant that serves locally sourced, homemade produce from the on-site kitchen garden.

Three young girls, one wearing a long-sleeved grey shirt with long brown hair in a ponytail, another wearing a long-sleeved pink shirt with mid-length brown hair tied in a pony tail, wearing glasses. And the last wearing a long-sleeved blue shirt with blonde hair tied in a ponytail. They are sat at a wooden picnic table in a grassy park, smiling and chatting. The sunny day and green trees create a joyful, relaxed atmosphere.

Whether you live in Cumbria, visiting or just passing through, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Pack yourself a picnic, and don’t miss the opportunity to visit these playgrounds for an unforgettable day out this summer!
