The transformation of Robert Parker Park in Lincolnshire highlights the power of community collaboration and determination. Led by the Friends of West End Play Space Committee, the goal was to create a low-maintenance, vibrant space for local children that would retain the park’s much-loved nautical theme.
For years, West End Play Space was a central hub for families, but recurring safety concerns led to the playground’s closure, frustrating both local families and the volunteer committee. By 2022, the park was deemed unsafe and condemned, creating a significant gap in the community and underscoring the need for a robust, low-maintenance playground.
In early 2023, Playdale was invited to work alongside Friends of West End Play Space committee and Lincolnshire County Council to provide a solution to the park’s long-standing issues. The site itself posed significant logistical challenges, as years of neglect had left it resembling a dense, overgrown “jungle,” making initial surveys and groundwork difficult. With limited access to the site, all materials and equipment had to be transported by hand. Additionally, underground service lines ran beneath the park, requiring careful planning to avoid disruption during installation.
Retaining the Community’s Vision: The Nautical Theme
From the very start, Playdale placed the community’s vision at the heart of the project. The beloved nautical theme was preserved, ensuring the space felt familiar to returning visitors while offering something fresh for new generations of children. Our Playground Design Team went above and beyond, creating two nautical-themed multi-play units that are suitable for all ages. To bring the theme to life, we also added a Shark Crawl Tunnel, sparking imagination and role play.
Durable, Low-Maintenance Equipment
Understanding the challenges of long-term maintenance, Playdale selected durable, low-maintenance equipment designed to withstand the test of time and ease the upkeep burden on volunteers. By incorporating robust laminated timber with steel ground fixings and vandal-resistant high-pressure laminate (HPL) panels, we were able to meet the community’s vision while ensuring lasting durability.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
The design and installation plan were adapted to overcome the site’s logistical constraints. With restricted access and underground utilities to consider, Playdale used manual labour to transport materials, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding services. We worked closely with Lincolnshire County Council throughout the process, refining and adjusting the design to meet both the community’s and the council’s expectations.
A New Chapter for the Community
The newly transformed Robert Parker Park marks the beginning of a new chapter for the community. The park was renamed in honour of Robert Parker, a founding member of the committee and a respected local councillor who played a key role in advocating for the project.
The opening was met with excitement and pride, especially from local families and children who now have a safe and engaging space to enjoy.
This transformation is a perfect example of what can be achieved when a passionate community, local government, and an experienced play equipment provider come together.

Playground Equipment Inspection & Maintenance Regular playground inspections and maintenance are the two most important responsibilities any playground operator carries. No matter how well-specified a play space is at the outset, equipment deteriorates over time – fixings loosen, surfaces wear and timber is subject to the elements. A structured inspection programme, paired with prompt and […]
